Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa, emphasized the importance of increasing crop yield through the use of new cutting-edge technologies on Monday, saying the farm sector must become smarter and more adaptable to climate change.
He said “India needs to grow in the agriculture sector” in order to achieve higher economic growth. Its production must rise quickly. That means we’ll need a lot of new cutting-edge technologies.”
Digitization of agriculture, technological transformation, and farm sector innovation have been important priorities advocated by the Indian presidency in the G20 this year, he noted.
“Transforming the agriculture sector into a data-driven, smart, and climate-change-adaptive sector is integral to the transformation of the agriculture sector, “Kant said, adding that this would entail a focus on open access agricultural data platforms and their recognition as global public goods.
He also stressed the importance of enlisting the help of entrepreneurs and prudent investments from the private and governmental sectors in order to improve the well-being of farmers, particularly small and marginal farmers.
Kant emphasized the need for farmers to adopt these technologies.
This year’s themes for the Agriculture Working Group included food security and nutrition, sustainable agriculture with a climate-smart strategy, inclusive agri value chains and food systems, and digitalization for agricultural transformation.
All of India’s G20 priorities have been established in the context of addressing global hunger and malnutrition in order to achieve the SDG of Zero hunger by leveraging technological innovation, according to Kant.
He stated that agricultural technical improvement is crucial. This would imply giving farmers real-time data and developing a crop production forecasting model
G20 nations have come together as the leading agricultural producers, consumers, and exporters to assume collective responsibility for transitioning to a more sustainable and resilient agricultural food system.
“Our fundamental goal should be to transform agriculture, the agri-food sector, into a very appealing and profitable modern business enterprise. “This must be accomplished by keeping farmers at the center of the digital revolution, facilitating inexpensive access to an inclusive digital infrastructure, and investigating digital technologies that cater to the demands of the agri sector,” Kant stated.
